"Naod Habtemichael’s thesis investigates how national identity shaped Swedish and Danish diplomatic strategies within the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) during the early 1960s, and how these strategies were reflected in national media. Drawing on a rich and previously unexplored set of archival materials, Naod offers a credible analysis of diplomatic behaviour and identity construction. His research also incorporates 40 newspaper articles from Denmark and Sweden, adding a valuable media perspective to the study. His thesis is the first academic study to systematically analyse these specific EFTA documents, filling a notable gap in the literature on European integration and diplomacy. Beyond its historical significance, the thesis contributes to ongoing discussions about national identity and foreign policy cooperation in Europe, issues that remain highly relevant today. In sum, Naod Habtemichael’s exceptionally well written thesis shows proof of academic excellence, methodological rigour, and high relevance to European studies."
