We would like to extend our warm congratulations to our colleague Jörgen Hettne, who has been appointed as a judge at the General Court of the European Union. In Luxembourg, he succeeds Fredrik Schalin, who was appointed as a judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union in 2024. The other Swedish judge at the General Court is Ulf Öberg.
The General Court is part of the Court of Justice of the European Union and primarily hears cases brought by individuals and companies against EU institutions. It deals with matters such as competition, state aid, intellectual property, and decisions made by the European Commission. Its purpose is to ensure that the EU institutions comply with the law in both their implementation and decision-making. Swedish judges are appointed by the government and must be approved by both the Court of Justice and the Council.
With this appointment, Jörgen is stepping down from his role as Professor of Business Law and Director of the Centre for European Studies at Lund University.
For many years, Jörgen has been a driving force in Swedish EU legal research and education. His dedication, deep expertise, and ability to build bridges between academia and practice have been invaluable to students, colleagues, and collaborators alike.
We are very proud of Jörgen’s appointment and warmly thank him for his contributions to the university. We wish him all the best in his new, prestigious role as judge in Luxembourg!
