Cristian Pons-Seres de Brauwer wins Best Thesis Award 2019

We are happy to announce that the Centre for European Studies’ Best Thesis Award 2019 has been awarded to Cristian Pons-Seres de Brauwer, LUCSUS, for his master’s thesis. Alexandra Teorell from the Faculty of Law received an honorary mention for her graduate thesis.
Cristian Pons-Seres de Brauwer

The Centre for European Studies (CFE) annually awards a prize for a bachelor’s or master’s thesis written on a European topic at Lund University. The winner of the 2019 award is Cristian Pons-Seres de Brauwer from LUCSUS with his master’s thesis Towards a citizen-driven low-carbon energy transition. Exploring the potential for collective investment schemes in community renewable energy in Europe to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

The jury’s motivation was as follows:
In his master’s thesis, Cristian Pons-Seres de Brauwer constructs a highly topical problem formulation about individual citizens’ potential participation in local renewable energy projects and the possible positive effects this could have on the EU’s 2030 renewable energy targets. The author thereby sets out with a bold ambition to analyse a future scenario. His refined research design involves several analytical steps and allows him to draw convincing conclusions about the substantial environmental gains of European citizens’ financing of local renewable energy projects. Furthermore, he contrasts his conclusions with the EU’s current energy policy to demonstrate how the policy would need to change in order to unlock this potential. In sum, this thesis is an excellent example of directly policy-relevant research that strives to affect the world for the better.

Cristian Pons-Seres de Brauwer was awarded 10 000 SEK. Here you can read his thesis.

We have asked Cristian some questions about his choice of thesis topic and about the writing process. You can read the interview here.

The jury can also choose to give an honorary mention to a second student. This year, the honorary mention went to Alexandra Teorell from the Faculty of Law for her graduate thesis A Company’s Guide to Environmental Action

The jury’s motivation was as follows:
In her graduate thesis, Alexandra Teorell focuses on EU competition law and sustainability and more specifically on the way companies can contribute to a better environment without running the risk of conflicting with competition law. She carries out an in-depth exploration of horizontal environmental agreements and standardisation agreements between companies and map a lawful path to horizontal collaboration between them. Her thesis provides a result-oriented legal solution which encourages companies to action. The legal analysis is on a highly advanced level and the subject is very relevant to today’s debate. The thesis is elegantly written and through a hands-on approach, it aims to reach out beyond the legal field and address the companies directly. In sum, this thesis is also an excellent example of directly policy-relevant research that strives to affect the world for the better.

Alexandra Teorell was awarded 5000 SEK for the honorary mention. Here you can read her thesis.

We also asked Alexandra some questions about her choice of thesis topic and about the writing process. You can read the interview here.

Congratulations to both winners!
