CFE Best Thesis Award 2018
Hannes Westermann's thesis concerns big data technologies, e.g. technologies permitting companies such as Facebook and Google to collect an enormous amount of personal data and to create profiles of online users. Hannes Westermann assesses whether this form of collection and usage of personal data conforms with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). He focuses in particular on the so-called purpose limitation principle which requires a specified purpose when collecting personal data. The subject is very topical and highly important for many sectors of society. The thesis contains a thorough survey of a multitude of legal sources and gives constructive suggestions for solutions to current problems as well as indications where further studies are needed. The analysis is well-structured, based on concrete examples and easy to follow.
